There are more concurrent users of RStudio Workbench/Server Pro than your license supports. Please obtain an updated license to continue using the product

You may see this error message occur for your older RStudio Workbench/Server Pro instance, as shown below:

This error message is a little bit misleading (and has been fixed in new releases of Posit Workbench). This error message is actually referring to the number of "named users" being more than your license supports.

A named user is any person who has logged in to Posit (formerly RStudio) Workbench within the last year.  However, the list in the admin dashboard only shows recent activity. Since version 1.4, we have added new admin commands to perform these operations from the command line instead of having to use the GUI. Documentation for these commands can be found in the admin guide.

The user's tab of the admin dashboard provides information on user sessions and shows you which users count against your license. More information on enabling the administrative dashboard can be found here:

One way to resolve the warning message is to lock users. Locking a user removes them as a named user, which will then prevent them from being counted against your license.  Please note that this is available where user will no longer require access to Workbench. You can lock users from the administrative dashboard, or via command line (if you are on v1.4.1717-3 or newer). To do this via the command line, you can run the commands below:

To lock users:

sudo rstudio-server lock-user <username>

To unlock users:

sudo rstudio-server unlock-user <username>

Please ensure you also restart the server for the change the take effect:

sudo rstudio-server restart

For information on how to count Named Users in Posit Workbench please refer to this article.

    Hi Joseph,

Are you using named user licensing, or do you have unlimited users on your Workbench license?

Note that this feature is only available on named user licenses, so it's worth checking the type of license you have before running this command!
