RStudio Workbench / RStudio Server Pro Standard and Enterprise FAQ

Follow

RStudio Server Pro Standard and Enterprise editions were announced on May 8, 2019. Standard and Enterprise editions are different from previous RStudio Server Pro editions in that they are priced per-user and include the remote Launcher feature.

RStudio Server Pro has been renamed RStudio Workbench, but the information in this article is still relevant to the comparison between Standard and Enterprise.

Why did RStudio choose Named User packaging and pricing for RStudio Server Pro?

Named User licensing is a common way to price and license data analysis and development tools. RStudio’s commercial desktop and RStudio Connect are already priced and packaged by Named User. For example, Named User pricing for RStudio Server Pro Standard is identical to the unchanged $995 per user per year price for the RStudio commercial desktop license. Now we can offer lower cost server options for smaller teams, unrestricted server options for larger teams, and make it easier to order bundled combinations of RStudio professional products.

Why is Launcher only available in RStudio Server Pro Standard and Enterprise?

Launcher is a feature only available in RStudio Server Pro Standard and Enterprise. Launcher offers greater flexibility and productivity benefits to professional data science teams. It is also an innovative way to overcome the local execution limitation in R and RStudio, which until now, helped justify purchases of multiple servers in larger companies. The assumption that execution would be local and that multiple servers would be common at scale was anticipated in our original pricing and packaging. Now the value of RStudio Server Pro is better aligned with the number of people who use it and not in the number of servers they use. We believe it is in every customer’s best interest for us to align what they pay with the value they receive to the best of our ability and, as a result, for us to grow and continue funding the open source work that benefits every R user.

How do customers of RStudio Server Pro without Launcher upgrade to Standard or Enterprise?

If you purchased RStudio Server Pro prior to May 2019, your edition of RStudio Server Pro did not include Launcher. You may choose to upgrade to RStudio Server Pro Standard or Enterprise by contacting sales@rstudio.com for a quote. Teams that have not previously purchased RStudio Server Pro before May 2019 may only purchase RStudio Server Pro Standard or RStudio Server Pro Enterprise.

If you purchased RStudio Server Pro prior to May 2019, but you are not interested in Launcher, you may also upgrade your existing server-based license to RStudio Server Pro 1.2 without Launcher at no charge. Packaging and pricing for RStudio Server Pro editions without Launcher is unchanged. If you would like to renew or add to your current RStudio Server Pro configuration, please contact sales@rstudio.com for a quote.

Customers with existing Named User license agreements for previous RStudio Server Pro editions may upgrade to RStudio Server Pro Enterprise at no charge. Please contact sales@rstudio.com.

What is the difference between RStudio Server Pro Standard and Enterprise editions?

RStudio Server Pro Standard includes one server activation and is a good choice for teams getting started. RStudio Server Pro Enterprise offers complete deployment flexibility with unrestricted server activations and is recommended for larger teams, several groups, or for virtualized IT environments.

What is Launcher?

Launcher allows you to run R sessions and background jobs on external cluster resource managers. Launcher includes a Kubernetes plugin for running R sessions and background jobs in Docker containers in Kubernetes. In addition to Kubernetes, Launcher can be extended to work with other cluster resource managers using its pluggable architecture. See our Launcher documentation for more information.
